چکیده

ij xixjδij , where xi is the frequency of the ith haplotype and δij is the fraction of nucleotides at which haplotypes i and j differ. It shouldn’t come to any surprise to you that just as there is interest in partitioning diversity within and among populations when we’re dealing with simple allelic variation, i.e., Wright’s F -statistics, there is interest in partitioning diversity within and among populations when we’re dealing with nucleotide sequence or other molecular data. We’ll see later that AMOVA can be used very generally to partition variation when there is a distance we can use to describe how different alleles are from one another, but for now, let’s stick with nucleotide sequence data for the moment and think of δij simply as the fraction of nucleotide sites at which two sequences differ.

Population genetics and phylogeography of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) from Brazil.

Population genetic analyses were conducted using samples of Aedes aegypti from 14 localities in the north, southeast, northeast, and central regions of Brazil. An 852-bp region of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene was used in the analyses. Ten haplotypes were observed, and cluster analyses revealed 2 groups (lineages) separated by 8 fixed mutations, suggesting that the Brazi...

Phylogeography of the Sino-Himalayan Fern Lepisorus clathratus on “The Roof of the World”

BACKGROUND The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and its southern and southeastern mountain ranges, Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains (HHM), are one of the most extensive habitats for alpine plants in the world. How ferns occurring in QTP and HHM changed their distribution ranges in response to Quaternary climatic oscillations remains almost unknown. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS We employed sequences of two...

Population structure and phylogeography of the short-tailed stingray, Dasyatis brevicaudata (Hutton 1875), in the Southern Hemisphere.

There is accumulating evidence that the degree of vagility explains little of the extent of population subdivision found within elasmobranch species. Instead, patterns of gene flow in elasmobranchs appear more closely linked to the presence of dispersal barriers, either physical or biological. Here, we investigate the potential role of some of these isolating mechanisms in shaping the populatio...

The statistical treatment of data and the Analysis of MOlecular VAriance (AMOVA) in molecular microbial ecology

Molecular ecological studies are often characterised by an extremely high number of samples and by an equal high number of molecular analyses to whom the samples have been subjected. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) is a powerful statistical method for the description of factors influencing the structure of populations. AMOVA has been applied to different biological systems, trying to...

Chloroplast DNA phylogeography of the shrub Cistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae) in the highly diverse Western Mediterranean region.

This study investigated the phylogeographic structure of Cistus ladanifer, in order to locate its Quaternary refugia, reconstruct its recolonisation patterns and assess the role of geographical features (mountain ranges, rivers and the Strait of Gibraltar) as barriers to its seed flow and expansion through the Western Mediterranean. Thirty-eight populations were screened for length variation of...
